Lagrange Interpolation Polynomials. If we wish to describe all of the ups and downs in a data set, and hit every point, we use what is called an interpolation polynomial. This method is due to Lagrange. Suppose the data set consists of N data points: (x 1, y 1), (x 2, y 2), (x 3, y 3), ..., (x N, y N) How many times a particular number is a zero for a given polynomial. For example, in the polynomial function f(x) = (x – 3) 4 (x – 5)(x – 8) 2, the zero 3 has multiplicity 4, 5 has multiplicity 1, and 8 has multiplicity 2. Although this polynomial has only three zeros, we say that it has seven zeros counting multiplicity.

  • In this case we have a product of three terms that is zero. The only way this product can be zero is if one of the terms is zero. This means that, 5x = 0 —› x = 0 . x – 2 = 0 —› x = 2 . x + 1 = 0 —› x = – 1 . So, we have three solutions to this equation. So, provided we can factor a polynomial we can always use this as a ...

A root (or zero) of a polynomial f(x) is a number r such that f(r)=0. A polynomial of degree n can have at most n distinct roots. A degree 2 polynomial is called a quadratic polynomial and can be written in the form f(x) = a x 2 + b x + c. Its graph is a parabola. The quadratic formula states that the roots of a x 2 + b x + c = 0 are given by
If we write a polynomial as p(x)=anxn+an1xn 1+··· a1x a0where an6=0,then n is the degree of p(x), anis the leading coecient of p(x), and anxnis the leading term of p(x). Informally, if a function is defined on some set, then we call that set the domain. The values taken by the function are collectively referred to as the range. For example, the function takes the reals (domain) to the non-negative reals (range). The sine function takes the reals (domain) to the closed interval (range). (Both of these functions ... When you take a function’s derivative, you are finding that function that provides the slope of the first function. Fortunately, calculating a derivative is simple for some functions, although it can get more complicated as we move on. First, we will take the derivative of a simple polynomial: \(4x^2+6x\).
